Three Years at #1: UGA Leads in Research to Commercialization

UGA tops AUTM list for bringing more research-based products to market than any other U.S. university

The University of Georgia continues to lead in translating innovative research into real-world applications. For three years running, UGA has earned the No. 1 ranking among U.S. universities for bringing new research-based products to market, according to AUTM’s annual surveys. And since those surveys began 12 years ago, UGA has been in the top 5.

From cutting-edge agricultural advances to biomedical device coatings that could save lives, UGA’s faculty turn ideas into impact and discoveries into meaningful change.

“Being ranked as the top university for the last three years is compelling recognition of the impactful research conducted by UGA faculty, staff, and students; our robust industry partnerships; and the university’s productive commercialization program,” said Derek Eberhart, associate vice president for research and executive director of Innovation Gateway. “Moving research discoveries from our labs and fields to the market improves lives and drives economic impact as part of UGA’s land-grant mission.”

Since UGA started tracking commercialization efforts in the 1970s, more than 1,250 products based on university research have reached the market. The university’s partnerships with industry continue to thrive, ranking No. 4 nationally for active licenses with industry and No. 17 for the number of licenses and options executed. For the 18th year in a row, UGA has placed among the top 20 in these key measures of innovation.

But it’s not just about rankings. It’s about transformative change and long-term contributions. UGA research yields tangible benefits from technology that destroys forever chemicals to virtual experiences that improve disaster preparedness.

“These accomplishments are a reflection of the talent, creativity, and dedication of our faculty, staff, and students,” said Chris King, interim vice president for research. “Their work and commitment fuel UGA’s growing reputation as a national leader in research and innovation, and we’re proud to support an environment where that work can thrive and deliver meaningful impact to people’s lives.”

That commitment—and UGA’s success in delivering real-world solutions—makes the university a powerhouse of innovation. The numbers speak for themselves, but the real story is in the lives improved by UGA research every day.
